Add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry
Registration is free. Personal home and cell phone numbers are eligible for the National Do Not Call Registry; business numbers and fax lines are not covered.
Online: Visit DoNotCall.gov, choose the registration option, and enter your phone number and email address. Complete registration by clicking the confirmation link emailed to you within 72 hours. You can register up to three numbers at a time; confirm each email.
By phone: Call 1-888-382-1222 from the number you want to register (TTY: 1-866-290-4236).
Allow up to 31 days for covered sales calls to stop. You can verify your registration at DoNotCall.gov. Save your confirmation and registration date. Registration does not expire, although a new or disconnected and reassigned number may need registration.
The Do Not Call Registry does not block calls or prevent every unwanted call. Other TCPA protections may apply even without registration.
Potential Violations
Sales calls to a personal phone number which has been registered on the National Do Not Call List for more than 30 days may be violations. A caller does not need to use an autodialer or a prerecorded voice for a Do Not Call claim. For a claim under § 227(c)(5), more than one violating call within 12 months by or on behalf of the same entity is required. Calls from unrelated companies are not automatically combined.
Consent and exceptions matter
Permission or an established business relationship may affect coverage. Political, charitable, survey-only, and debt-collection calls are generally outside the Do Not Call Registry’s sales-call restriction, although other laws or TCPA provisions may apply.
You can also tell a particular company to stop sales calls. Company-specific Do Not Call protections are separate from registration.
Bring these details
- Do Not Call Registry confirmation and registration date.
- Call dates, times, numbers, seller names, and what was being sold.
- Any purchase, inquiry, consent form, or stop request.
Other telemarketing conduct
Other potential violations include sales calls before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. in your local time, missing caller identification, or ignored company-specific stop requests. These may raise additional issues; not every rule violation supports the same private remedy.
Example to discuss with us
You registered your personal number months ago and keep receiving sales pitches for insurance, home services, or vehicle coverage from the same seller. Tell us what was offered and whether you requested information or gave permission.
